From The Machine: Volume 1

From The Machine, Volume 1 is a the first in a series of albums from composers Joseph Branciforte & Kenneth Kirschner that explores the application of software-based compositional techniques — including algorithmic processes, generative systems, and indeterminacy — to the creation of new music for acoustic ensembles.

The music for this album was composed entirely in the Max environment (with the help of the bach externals), translated into traditional musical notation, and performed by musicians from International Contemporary Ensemble & Flux Quartet.

Branciforte’s 0123 for low string quartet was created using a system of harmonic permutations & voice-leading logic that relied extensively on the bach library. In workshop performances of the piece, a network of laptops equipped with bach.score-based displays allowed realtime experimentation with the form of the piece, before it was fixed into its final shape for the album’s recording sessions.
